I recently attended an event at Willow Springs Raceway sponsored by Clarion Audio and Formula Drift Champion, Chris Forsberg. The event was 90% to unveil the Clarion Builds 1991 Acura NSX that was fully re-built by the Clarion Sponsors to become a publicity showcase for the partners. Kyosho America was brought in as a partner to give somewhat of a break to the full-scale event bringing in some “scaled” down 1/10th Fazer plat-formed vehicles. This is not the first time a full-scale event brought in an RC manufacturer to have some fun. But, is it good for RC?
Traxxas is famous for partnering with the TORC (The Off-Road Championship) Series, well, why wouldn’t they since Mike Jenkins, Traxxas Owner and CEO also drives and wins in the TORC Series. Traxxas also has endeavored into the NHRA (National Hot Rod Associated) sponsoring the Force family of 16 time NHRA World Champion, John Force and his daughter, Funny Car driver, Courtney Force. Team Associated has also dabbled in the 1:1 world with the Lucas Oil Off-Road Series and most recently replicating Formula Drift’s Fredric Aasbo’s and Ken Gushi’s livery mounted to Team Associated APEX sedan chassis.
Did we leave out the Scalers/Crawlers? Axial Racing is the “king” of partnerships most recently releasing the RR-10 Bomber 1/10th scale replica based on Randy Slawson’s 2013 King of the Hammer’s winning rig. Jeep, Icon, King, BFGoodrich, Method, Griffin, Rigid Industries and SCORE are just a fraction of the existing partnerships with Axial Racing.
The Kyosho/Clarion Builds event is just one of many events that bring a smaller niche (like Radio Control) linked to a mainstream venue like Formula Drift and Car Audio. It’s good for both parties and get’s people that might not think they would be interested in RC, touching them and feeling it in a way that most of you reading already appreciate. Kyosho gave away a brand new Kyosho Dodge Chalenger SRT HellCat Fazer at the event and it wasn’t to show their generosity. It was to get a similar hobby (full-scale vehicle enthusiests) interested in another.
