So, Radio/Remote Control “hobbies” did not make the top 50 list and I would imagine it’s probably not even in the top one hundred. According to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary, “Hobby” is defined as “ a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation.” I also searched for “most popular hobby, 2016” on Google and the number one search result rendered the following as the 10 most popular hobbies:
- Watching TV
- Family Time
- Going to the Movies
- Renting Movies
Really? I get Family Time – There’s nothing better than to spend time with your family, especially if you can tolerate them! Fishing, okay….Gardening, maybe. All the rest of the hobbies on the list are what seems like normal day-to-day activities.
Most working adults spend the majority of their time seeking that ever moving carrot – the mighty dollar, euro, pound or what ever your hometown uses to purchase goods and services. On average, 50 hours a week is spent either at work, getting to work or thinking about work. Now take sleeping and you have at best 20 hours a week to get some sort of hobby in. Remember Webster’s (I ditched Merriam) calls it relaxation. Number 40 on the list of hobbies is Animal Care, all right, I’m down to 15 hours now.
With every turn, there are distractions and hobbies that take up time, energy and sanity. Certain hobbies can consume hours at a time like number 26 -watching sports and numbers 2, 4, 6, and 8 – spending time looking at screens. To most, hobbies are merely a past time that sometimes can result in frustration, anxiety and in the end a waste of money and time.
